CUPPING

The 2016 Olympics have brought to the attention of the general public this traditional medicine practice called cupping. Cupping was used by Olympic athletes to help them safely recover from injuries and perform at the best of their ability with no or minimal side effects.

Why Cupping?

People use Cupping to treat pain because it is said to facilitate blood flow through the connective tissues, thereby helping with removing buildup of toxic waste materials. Proper blood flow is very important to health and well being.

Cupping is also used on the upper back to help speed up healing from cold or flu, as its blood moving and vacuuming effects can help strengthen the lungs and open up the chest.

Note: Besides treating pain and respiratory issues,  Cupping has also many other applications and treat a variety of other symptoms.

How Cupping Works

The modern name for Cupping is "myofascial decompression."  Basically, Cupping exercises a  negative pressure on the connective tissues, and this has many benefits.. This type of vacuum cupping lifts up tissues and activates releases of nitric oxide which causes your blood vessels to dilate,  the result of which allows better blood flow through the connective tissues. Toxins are processed better and optimal blood flow is achieved. It helps reduce swelling, it relieves fatigue, and alleviate chronic aches. It helps to loosen up connective tissues and helps break fascial adhesion . It helps to loosen and relax muscles, relieving pain and muscle stiffness.

Static Cupping: Cups are left in place for some time

Dynamic Cupping: Cups are moved along the skin

What to expect during a session: A warm yet strong pulling sensation that relieves tension and helps loosen up tight muscles, and fascia adhesions.

Why you should go to an Acupuncturist for Cupping

Cupping has been part of Chinese Medicine for more than 2000+ years. Though cupping is also practiced all over the world and by many different types of people, acupuncturists are considered experts in this modality. In the US, acupuncturists are thoroughly trained, supervised, and tested in cupping modalities. They know the indications and the contra-indications of cupping, and as such are able to provide you with  the best and safest types of cupping modalities.
